This collection comprises administrative records that document Roland McFatridge Smith’s role as Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at Carnegie Mellon University from 1980-1985. Biographical / Historical
Roland McFatridge Smith (b. 1936) earned his B.A. (1971) and Ph.D. (1973) in history from Carnegie Mellon University. He held several academic and administrative positions at CMU, including assistant professor of history, assistant to the president for faculty recruitment, and associate provost for academic affairs (1980–1985). He also served on the university’s Affirmative Action Committee and advised the Black Student Graduate Organization. Smith later held the position of vice president for student life at the University of Delaware, retiring in 2003.
