This collection comprises administrative records that document Roland McFatridge Smith’s role as Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at Carnegie Mellon University from 1980-1985. Included are materials related to the recruitment, enrollment, and support of minority students and faculty, including minority scholarships, fellowships, and employment opportunities.

Series 1, Administrative Files, 1981-1985, contains administrative records related to Roland M. Smith's role as Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at CMU. In includes meeting minutes, grant and fellowship proposals, event planning documents, reports, statistics, and correspondence.

Series 2, Programs, 1979 - 1986, contains records related to academic and community programs at CMU. It includes reports, statistics, and publicity materials.

Series 3, Recruitment and Enrollment, 1981-1986, contains records related to the recruitment and enrollment of minority students and faculty. It include materials related to CMU as well as outside programs.

Biographical / Historical

Roland McFatridge Smith (b. 1936) earned his B.A. (1971) and Ph.D. (1973) in history from Carnegie Mellon University. He held several academic and administrative positions at CMU, including assistant professor of history, assistant to the president for faculty recruitment, and associate provost for academic affairs (1980–1985). He also served on the university’s Affirmative Action Committee and advised the Black Student Graduate Organization. Smith later held the position of vice president for student life at the University of Delaware, retiring in 2003.
